failsafe engine mode on s type jaguar. What causes this light to come on intermitantly when there is no apparant problem ?

Hi, welcome to Just Answer.

You'll need to have the engine computer scanned with a factory level scan tool, there should be a diagnsotic code stored in there for the illumination of the message of the "failsafe mode." Commonly it is a failing MAF (mass airflow sensor), or a missfire on one of the cylinders due to a bad ignition coil. If you can get that code(s) and post it here I can give you a more indepth idea of what area of the engine controls is begining to fail. In some cases the throtle body on these is starting to fail, and when it goes out completely the car is not drivable.
